In Which I Hide

I'm guest posting today over at Lana's place, Mother Hides The Pearls. I had yet another awesome experience at the laundromat recently, which I, of course, just had to share because these things seem to only happen to me. Head on over there to read all about it.

---

I finally got to see an allergist yesterday. I was looking forward to this appointment, in hopes that I'd finally get some idea as to what exactly is going on, so I can return to my apartment and try to get my life back to normal.

After taking some time to explain the whole ordeal to the doctor, and giving him the two calendar pages I had printed out that charted the onset and progression of everything, he agreed that I should be tested to see what I'm allergic to. In preparation for this appointment, on Tuesday this week I stopped taking all the antihistamines and the steroids, so I wouldn't get false-positive results at the allergists office.

And so came the prick test. I took my shirt off and sat still while the doctors assistant slathered my arms in alcohol. While she marked my arms with a pen, I eyed the tray of needles. There were six brackets of needles, each with four or five needles attached to them. When the time came, she rolled the needles up my arm in a rocking motion, which exposed the needle and jabbed a small dose of various allergens under my skin.

"Sit tight," she said, and left the room for 15 minutes.

As it would turn out, I would not react to any of the allergens on this test. The assistant carefully examined my arms before leaving the room again, and came back with another tray. This tray was full of tiny glass bottles, and next to the bottles was a large pile of syringes. She swabbed my arm with alcohol again, and got right down to business.

I watched as she pulled into each syringe a small amount of the liquid from each of the glass bottles, and deduced that this test was the same as the first test, just with a higher dose of the allergen. This test was considerably more painful than the first, if only for the number of times I had to get jabbed with a needle than for the actual pain each one caused.

27 syringes later...

"Sit tight," she said again, and left the room for another 15 minutes.

As it would turn out, again, I would still not be allergic to anything in the test. Not even dogs.

What the fuck.

I got all cleaned up and put my shirt back on, and discussed the results with the allergist once he came back into the exam room. He told me that 1 in 5 people have reactions similar to mine at random points in their lives, and the symptoms disappear before anyone can figure out the cause. He does think I have an interesting case still, with there being no rhyme or reason for the onset and progression of my symptoms, and also that I have other symptoms like joint pain. He ordered some lab work, and I have a follow-up appointment with him in a little over two weeks.

To say I was unsatisfied with the appointment would be putting it mildly.

I'm not confident that the results from the allergen test were accurate. I had only been off of the antihistamines and steroids for a little over 2 days before the test, so I'm not sure if there would have been any residual traces of the medications in my system still or not. In my mind, knowing how my symptoms got worse while I was around the dog we had adopted, and improved when I was away from the dog... Well, that seems pretty cut and dry to me.

I'm scheduled to see another (more highly reputable) allergist early next month. This doctor has been called the Dr House of allergies, so I'm hoping he can shed some more light on the situation. I'm going to remain off of the medications until I can see him, and I've been cleared to return to my apartment by early next week.

I'm going to try to remain off work until I see the other allergist, but we'll see how that goes. As always, I'll do my best to keep you all updated on the situation.

Hope you all have a great weekend!

Trust your instincts... you know your body. I think some dogs are more allergen-laden than others so maybe the generic "dog" allergen tester was not the right kind. Or maybe it's something on your dog? I shampoo or flea medication, perhaps?

I apparently missed my calling. Is it too late to go to medical school?

The Dr. House of allergies? Will he send a team into your home to investigate? (I use that to get the hubs and kids to clean stuff up: if one of us gets sick, do you want the team of doctors to see the house looking like this?)

That does NOT sound like a fun day - and then to get absolutely no satisfaction from it? Grrr.

Damn...That sucks. But at least you have an appointment with House. Don't take no for an answer! Maybe after everything is and done - we'll find a new allergy to something - and we'll name it after you! It'll be BadAss Allergy!

Melanie's Randomness said...

Omg I'm the same way!! I'm allergic to everything under the sun especially kiwis, and nothing ever comes up on those tests. They are like Oh your fine. I swear they don't know what they are doing. I hope the new one goes good for you!! =)

Nyx said...

I've had both of those tests done.

They were all 'we'll do it on your back' and I was all "No Siree Bob you will not!" He was a DOM. (Dirty Old Man)

So they did it on my arms. Unfortunately, I was damn near allergic to everything they tested me for, so I spent the rest of the day resisting the urge to scratch the first few layers of skin off of my arms.

Hopefully the other allergist will have some answers for you. Good luck!

Heh... prick test...

Anyway, I can only imagine my own irritation if I had needles anywhere near my body with no results. Damn modern medicine. Here's hoping Dr. House can figure it out.

Jaime said...

But I don't understand. You are suddenly not allergic anymore?

Aunt Juicebox said...

Damn. Well, it could have even been the shampoo they used on the dog at the shelter you got her from. Or her flea meds, or something she was bringing in from outside. Crazy!

Well my niece is allergic to peanuts and she always tests positive for it regardless of what meds she's taking at the time, so I don't know if it was that inaccurate for you.

Dr House = drooool

Verrry... Interesting... keep us posted. Mysteriously so.

This is frustrating. I hope the next doctor can shed light on it. Good luck!

How annoying. I'm sorry you didn't get any answers. Same thing happened with my ear. I just have to "sit tight" and wait for my follow up appointment next month.

Mrs Soup said...

Oh dear. I was hoping they could figure it out. :( Hopefully the Dr. House dude figures it out!!

Well, the same thing happened to me. $1,100 allergy tests, and the doctor told me I'm not allergic to anything. Yeah, but every single fall, like clockwork, my eyes start to itch and water, and I feel like total shit. I'm not allergic to anything, though. Okay.

Then, when I went back the next year for my follow-up with the nurse practitioner, she told me that the fact that the scratch tests didn't show anything did not mean that I wasn't allergic to something. It just meant that allergy shots would do nothing to help me.

My friend, however, came up positive on all kinds of things on the scratch test, spent over a year going in for allergy shots, and guess what - she's still suffering horribly from her allergies. Nothing changed for her after all of those shots.

It's tricky business, and I agree that you should be off all the allergy meds long before you have that test. They probably won't want to repeat it, though, because it's so expensive. Watch out for the insurance on that!! Make sure it will be covered.

They did mine on my back. They drew all the gridwork, and then got out all those small little fishhook looking things. Ugh!

In my case there were immediate results, in fact, they stopped the test 1/2 way through, and just said "Yeah, you're allergic to everything."

I did shots for 3 years (one in each arm, twice a week), and now I only have to take a pill during the really bad times of year.

I was really hoping the test would work as well for you. Hopefully House can help you out.

Don't give up!

I passed out reading about all your needles. I feel for you.

Aunt Becky said...

Well, SHIT, man. SHIT. I'm sorry.

Mwa said...

What a drag for you. I hope the next one does better. And being stuck with so many needles for no reason - ouch.

Moonspun said...

Yikes, that must be super frustrating! It always helps to know. I hope you 1) feel better soon and 2) figure something out, too!

Did you have any of the tests I recommended? I'm curious to hear the results if/when you get em.

And I see that you are twittering and it looks like you wrote"snotty boobs may be weird, but they are wonderful" and then i realize you are writing TO snotty...

Did you ever see that epidisode of The Brady Bunch when Jan was allergic to the family dog (Tiger) 'cept she wasn't allergic to the dog but to the shampoo. That could be it!

JennyMac said...

I had these tests done in my back..after taking allergy medicine for 5 years the tests proved I am allergic to nothing. Neat.

I hope you get some answers and peace of mind on this soon...

It's a good thing you're not allergic to needles! I have a friend who was having some really serious health problems. She went to three different doctors and they couldn't find anything. Finally her husband asked, could we have a ___ test done. He was right, they found the problem, and now she's all better. Moral of the story: if you have a hunch or feeling, be sure to tell the doctor about it.

Jane Lively: Some breeds produce more dander than others, so that may be it.

Kat: What do we do? We swiiiim! Swiiiim!

Tammy Howard: I hope they don't come and search my house. It's a fucking mess.

Minivan Soapbox: I like the sound of that.

Melanie's Randomness: I hope so, too.

Nyx: The new allergist is a thinker, so I think he'll do some good.

Coach J: I was waiting for someone to joke about that!

Jaime: No, I think I'm still allergic, but according to the tests, I'm not.

Aunt Juicebox: All the dog allergies aside, I'm still having reactions when I'm not around dogs.

The Good Cook: Mysterious indeed.

DSMCaron: Thank you!

NFTG: I'm used to the "wait and see" response. Doesn't make it suck any less.

Mrs Soup: I hope so!

Lola: I do plan on staying off the meds if I can help it. I'm not sure if I'll go through another prick test with the new allergist or not. He may just have the solution otherwise.

Nej: I wouldn't mind getting inoculated, if only they could find out what I'm allergic to.

Stereos and Souffles: Sorry. And thanks.

Aunt Becky: Yeah. Shit.

Mwa: Lucky for me, I'm used to pain.

Moonspun: Thank you!

Maggie May: I haven't yet, no. I'm going to let the doctors run what they want first, and if that doesn't prove any results, I will.

Beth: I didn't see that episode, no. Considering that the dog is no longer living with us, though, I don't know if that's it.

JennyMac: Me, too.

Mrs B: Good advice. Thank you.

I don't remember the details but several years ago I met with an allergist who did the testing with BLOOD samples. He drew several vials and supposedly sent them somewhere and then I came back for the details.

I had the scratch tests many years ago and all they said was that I was allergic to dust.....who isn't?

The blood test said I was allergic to several different grasses and cats and dogs. They actually graded the allergies on a scale of 1 to 5. I've had dogs and cats my whole life and I've also had post-nasal drip most of my life. That's an allergic symptom which is a whole lot easier to live with than the ordeal you've just been through.

Have you looked into more indepth testing?

LiLu said...

I'm so, so sorry hon. Please keep us updated... I would definitely go see another doctor!

Chibi Jeebs said...

Oh, man! I was really hoping you'd get some answers! Not knowing is almost worse than the symptoms. I'll keep my fingers crossed Dr. Itchyhouse can figure it out (how soon is "early next month"?).

I have had a similar incident with allergies. I have never had them before in my life but the begining of the summer was the worst time of my life......... Some doctors are simply wrong or don't care enough to really look for the answer. ps season premiere of family guy starts tonight at nine

Dude, the same thing happened to me when I was about 25 - hives for no apparent reason, was on steroids off and on for six months, extensive allergy testing and no conclusive reason for them. It's frustrating, and I'm sorry you're going through this.
