As what often happens around here when both The Boss and I lack the desire to make anything else, we had breakfast for dinner the other night. The particular meal we had goes by a few different names, with The Boss calling it "Egg In A Hole", and I grew up calling it "Toad In A Hole". Whatever you may call it, it's a slice of grilled toast with the center cut out of it, and you cook an egg in the middle. It's easy enough to make and it's pretty tasty, so it wins major points in my book. It's not fancy or gourmet by any stretch of the word, but that's alright with me.
That night, I was in charge of the griddle and thus the turning of the egg/toast combo when they were done cooking on one side. I don't normally get entrusted to do such things because The Boss has major control issues whenever it comes to someone else cooking in the kitchen, but there I was nonetheless. I was reveling in all the control I had, all the power I had!... and then The Boss reminded me to flip 'em already because it smelled like they were burning.
The Boss' portion had cooked to her liking, so I removed her two slices of Egg-In-A-Hole from the griddle. I flipped mine one last time to make sure it was completely cooked (I very much dislike runny eggs), and this is what I saw:

I guess I make a mean breakfast.
Literally.

Is that Jesus?
MMMM that looks delish!Evil as it may be. But really, Brinner is the most awesome meal on the planet!
I guess you do make a mean breakfast!
I don't know what you guys see, but I see a smiley face!!
Are you all negative people, or do I have some sort of regressed childhood issues??
Too funny! Love breakfast for dinner. My kids, hate it. So we don't do it hardly ever! Grrr.
lol i see the Grinch!!! i love egg-in-the hole :)
I agree with Zoe, I definitely see a smiley face...
I don't even like eggs but this looks good. (:
Kayla
Hunger must have really tickled your imagination.
I see a smiley face too, but it looks like a skull smiley face.
-->I see a happy face too.
Now we know where the aliens are hiding - your griddle. It's a happy alien, but an alien nonetheless.
I see a smiley face as well.
That's one tasty, evil looking breakfast!
It looks like a skull with flames coming out the top. Awesome.
We call it Toad in the Hole. I adore breakfast for dinner...but growing up, my dad HATED it. So we only got it if he was gone on a business trip. It still is a special event for me.
I think it looks pretty angry. We used to call them Rocky Mountain Eggs or Eggs in a Basket. They are amazing. I highly recommend dousing them in I Can't Believe it's not Butter spray. No calories, and so much salty deliciousness.
Hee Hee! That is one angry egg in hole my friend! Funny you posted this...I JUST had a discussion over this meal in which someone was telling me they called it "toad in a hole." I scoffed cynically as I proclaimed, "it's called egg in a hole."
Guess we were both right!
Damn. Now I'm hungry!
I guess there's something wrong with me.....I see a fried "over" egg in the middle of a piece of toast! We always called 'em "holey" eggs, and hubbie says they're "bird's nest" eggs (?). Whatever, they're delish!
I hope you didn't eat it, you should have called the Guiness folks to check it out first.
We called it Egg in a Frame and I was a master Egg in a Framer when I was 12. Love it even now. I was wondering what to have for dinner. Thanks Badass Geek!
Kinda looks like it's smiling. An evil smile maybe...but a smile. :-)
Almost sorta kinda looks like Deadpool to me... *cocks head to the right*
So do you like your yolks cooked all the way through? Because thats nasty when talking about a fried egg.
Anyhoo. I see the scream mask. Or a blow up porn doll. Take your pick.
Nasty egg face! I'm going to see that in my dreams tonight.
So. How do I make these?
Wow! just when ya thought ya heard of everthing...you learn about a new food dish! I'm gonna try that this weekend and surprise MY boss.
Totally agree with the grinch vision...first thing that came to mind. Alien would be second.
Whoa man, I think your meal just smiled at you.. =p
That's classic. We call it "Moonstruck" breakfast because Olympia Dukakis' character makes it for Cher's character and well, it's my favorite movie. I particularly like them with sourdough bread, nice and crusty!
Creepy!!
What do you do with the little round portion of bread you removed?
I would fashion a hat. A teeny tiny bread hat.
Nice! My mom used to make "stick eggs". It's a soft boiled egg with the top sliced off. Stick in a shot glass and dip strips of buttered toast in. YUMMY!!!
i dunno. the egg looks like it has merged with the toast. carbs and cholestrol, can that really be good for you?
XXX, Kim
Confession: I've never had egg in a hole.
Just the name weirds me out.
Sounds like a sex breakfast.

Chibi Jeebs: YES. YES.
Melissa: I'll only eat an egg if the yolks cooked through.
Mad Woman: Use a small cup to cut the hole out of a slice of buttered bread. Crack egg and place it in the hole. Cook. Eat. Yum.
Chuck: NICE.
Eissel: I think so, too.
Moonspun: I'll have to try that!
Becca: Indeed.

Sandy: I think so, too.
I'm a-skeered of your breakfast!
(we call 'em 'birds nests' - not that you asked...)
I just see yummy. And I call it ila bread. When I was a kid my cousin and I would make them and she was from Germany and I think she was actually calling them Ei bread or Eier bread, but to me it came out as ila bread. I could eat me a whole plateful of that stuff though. Nothing better than bread pan fried in buttah.
Mmm. I want that now.
I love egg in a hole! add cheese and maple syrup and I'm reeeally in love!
I never had that before - is that an angry face or a happy face?
Possessed. I love it.
That looks yummy. I've never had it before but it seems easy enough to try... hmmmm...
I'm just shocked that my mother never made those for me...
